Throat Care

Department Details:

Throat Care involves diagnosing and treating a range of conditions that affect the throat, voice, and swallowing. This includes disorders such as chronic hoarseness, swallowing difficulties, snoring, and sleep apnea. We offer both medical treatments and surgical options, tailored to each patient's needs. Whether you’re struggling with voice-related issues, recurrent infections, or obstructed breathing during sleep, our team of experts works to restore optimal throat health and improve your overall quality of life. We use the latest diagnostic tools and techniques to ensure precise treatment, providing relief from discomfort and enhancing throat function.

Voice and swallowing disorders can be disruptive to your daily life, making it difficult to speak, eat, or drink comfortably. These disorders can arise from a variety of causes, including vocal cord strain, infections, neurological conditions, or trauma. Common symptoms include hoarseness, a weak or breathy voice, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), and even choking while eating. We offer thorough evaluations to identify the underlying cause of your voice or swallowing problems. Treatment may include voice therapy with a speech-language pathologist, medications to reduce inflammation or treat infections, and in some cases, surgery to correct structural abnormalities in the throat. Our goal is to restore your voice function, improve swallowing safety, and provide strategies to help you communicate and eat more effectively.

The tonsils and adenoids are lymphatic tissues located at the back of the throat that help protect against infection, but they can also become infected themselves, leading to chronic issues. Infections of the tonsils (tonsillitis) and adenoids (adenoiditis) can cause symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, snoring, and recurrent ear infections. When conservative treatments like antibiotics fail, or when these conditions significantly affect your quality of life, tonsil and adenoid removal may be necessary. Tonsil and adenoid surgeries are typically recommended for children who experience frequent throat infections or breathing difficulties, but they can also benefit adults.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that causes intermittent interruptions in breathing during sleep, often leading to loud snoring, gasping, and choking sounds. This can result in poor sleep quality, daytime fatigue, and other health issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. There are two main types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where the airway is blocked by relaxed throat muscles, and central sleep apnea, which occurs when the brain fails to signal proper breathing.

For moderate to severe cases, we offer CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy, which uses a mask to keep the airway open during sleep. In cases where non-invasive treatments are ineffective, we may recommend surgical interventions, such as the removal of excess tissue in the throat (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, or UPPP) or the use of a surgically implanted device to stimulate the muscles and keep the airway open (inspire therapy). Our goal is to help you achieve restful, uninterrupted sleep and improve your overall health and well-being.
